You can revisit – the wonderful thing about my job is you can revisit your 22-year-old self or your 24-year-old self any particular night you want. The songs pick up some extra resonance, I hope, but they’re still – they’re there, and I can revisit that period of my life when I choose. So it’s quite a nice experience.

Life is an ever-flowing process and somewhere on the path some unpleasant things will pop up – it might leave a scar, but then life is flowing, and like running water, when it stops it grows stale. I’d like to help other comedians and when I get a little older I’d like to open up a nice comedy club that is straight classy, with a straight restaurant and a chef. The whole thing, red carpet, and treating people nice, for people to come back and have a good time. That’s the kind of comedy club I want to open up.

One nice thing about my momma is, she never gets on you for what you are not doing. I mean, she never looks away from the things you do only to notice what isn’t on the plan. This is the most important thing in getting along with…anybody, and I can tell you because I copy it from her and it makes good sense. You don’t go looking at the things people don’t do, when they already be doing plenty in other areas. If your son collects stamps, why you want to go fussing at him because he doesn’t play the clarinet? Check out his stamps, man.

We’ve been taught, “Deny yourself pleasure.” But moderation is harder because it requires really committing to balance. When I tell my trainer I had a glass of wine, he’ll say, “Liquid bread!” And I’m like, “Ugh, but it was a nice one.” It’s a matter of checks and balances. And I finally found out how to set myself up to succeed. But I still need to commit to it. And everything gets exponentially harder the older you are. Fifty is a terrifying number for some people.

I just want to say that um, I’m just really, really shocked at like how nice our world is because it’s just so nice. Like oh my God! Like, the other day, like I was sitting there and I saw these magazines and they said I was pregnant, and like, it’s so true. Like America, believe everything you read. Because, like, you’re smart and I’m stupid. Like for real. Come on y’all.

I feel like, when the audience connects with something, they enjoy the experience so much that they want other people to go have it. They’re like, “Don’t talk about it. Don’t tell. Just go!” It’s a nice feeling to have people coming around it that way, protecting the ideas in it, so that everyone can see it for themselves.

I would show my jobs to my mother, and she would always say the same thing: “That’s nice dear”. And then she would say: “Did you write it or did you do the drawing?” or “Did you take the pictures?” I’d always answer “no”, then I realized the problem. My answer was then, “I made this happen”. It’s called design.

I mostly used the studio devices, because I knew what they had. Generally I find I’m happy to use whatever’s around. If there’s nothing there I’ll make something. For example, one of the things I tried doing was getting a tiny loudspeaker and feeding the instruments off the tape through this tiny speaker and then through this huge long plastic tube – about 50 feet long – that they used to clean out the swimming pool in the place where I was staying. You get this really hollow, cavernous, weird sound, a very nice sound. We didn’t use it finally, but nonetheless we well could have.
