When auditioning, I try to imagine that I’m the only person that they [directors] are seeing that day because it can be overwhelming, in the same sense that it could be overwhelming if you try to fulfil everyone’s expectations rather than the people closest to you in the creative process, be it your director, or fellow actors and the writers. So, that’s kind of it – I try to trick myself into believing that no one has ever gone there before.

I find it really interesting that people are shocked by the raw, natural representation of a woman and a man’s body. I guess it’s subverting our expectations in terms of how we’ve come to expect women to present themselves when they’re being naked. Also the woman’s and the man’s role is subverted in that image. You’d expect the man to be carrying the woman.

Americans love marriage too much. We rush into mariage with abandon, expecting a micro-Utopia on earth. We pile all our needs onto it, our expectations, neuroses, and hopes. In fact, we’ve made marriage into the panda bear of human social institutions: we’ve loved it to death.
