I think everyone’s kind of just whistling and pretending everything’s OK. At the heart of this is the cover-up, and the misleading the country to war in Iraq. And quite honestly, I don’t think Republicans actually did a particularly good or sophisticated job, but I think everybody wanted to be fooled. I remember being on the Bill Maher show talking about how ridiculous this was before the invasion. And, you know, a lot of people, even Democrats, had been so easily thrown into this fear frenzy that they lost common sense.

What you learn about yourself is that you continue to see that you’re selfish. It’s so easy, in our Laodicean culture with all the different things that grab our minds that aren’t of eternal value, to let those tentacles wrap themselves around your heart. That’s one of the reasons why we love going overseas. It helps us to break free of those things. We’ve been on all of these trips, but it’s easy to slide back into the selfishness of life. That’s what we find out about ourselves.

When I think about the holidays, I think about the Salvation Army guys ringing bells in front of stores. They’re always so nice to you and they’re always willing to give a heart to heart conversation. They actually bear the winter cold to ask for your petty cash with a smile on their face. Fudge those guys.

When I read the script [of Glee], the whole premise was that all the high school kids were being cruel to this kid in the wheelchair, and then the quarterback comes along and has a heart of gold and takes him out of a Porta Potty. That’s too often what I see in media, that the characters with disabilities are there to make other people seem like heroes for treating the character with a disability with respect. Those are the kinds of roles that are out there.
