Silly Quotes

Las Vegas is a major family destination. Nevada casinos have become American family values now. It’s considered just fine to go into one of these windowless scary gambling-malls, drink yourself silly, lose your ass at roulette, and then go ogle showgirls with breast implants. Republicans do this now. Working-class folks do it in polyester stretch pants. It’s normal.

Half the time, you go on any one of these news sites, whether it be a Yahoo or a Google, and one of the top headlines is always, “Did a comedian go too far?” or “Comedian offends.” It’s like, “Really? Comedian?” A person that’s supposed to make funny and make silly and historically was the only person who was allowed to make fun of the king? We’re the ones that you’re taking seriously?

I try not to “perform.” I try to come on stage and be myself, to sing the way I would in a room by myself, to interact with the audience the way I would relate to them if we were in my kitchen drinking tea and making up silly songs. Maybe the way to get past the fear of being ourselves is simply to try it more often.

Anyway, when I finished the book, I handed it in, didn’t want to read it again, but when it finally was in print I felt like OK, I have to read this. And yeah, I thought God, this is petty, this is silly, too emotional, too raw…and maybe it was then, but now it all seems that it’s so much better because all the stuff that felt petty and silly now seems more relevant because Andy was so important.
