The single best way to develop leaders . . . is to take people out of their safe environment and away from the people they know, and throw them into a new arena they know little about. Way over their head, preferably. In fact, the more demanding their challenges, the more pressure and risk they face, the more likely a dynamic leader will emerge.

That historian or scholar who delights in pointing out the weaknesses and frailties of present or past leaders destroys faith. I have no question that the Roman Catholic Church teaches that abortion in virtually all circumstances is wrong. I think the church’s position at all times in modern history has been that it is unequivocally opposed to abortion.But that’s not the question for a Catholic who is a public official. I happen to subscribe to the church’s position as a person. Still the question, as Governor Mario Cuomo suggested, is: what is your obligation as a civic leader? I agree entirely with John F. Kennedy. I answer only to my conscience in my public life and that’s that.

The Bible is not considered an accurate, absolute, authoritative, or authoritarian source but a book to be experienced and one experience can be as valid as any other can. Experience, dialogue, feelings, and conversations are equated with Scripture while certitude, authority, and doctrine are to be eschewed! No doctrines are to be absolute and truth or doctrine must be considered only with personal experiences, traditions, historical leaders, etc. The Bible is not an answer book.
